Hip osteoarthritis prosthesis treatment
The hip is made up of the upper part of the thigh bone (head of the femur) and the pelvic cavity (acetabulum) in which it slides. At the level of this joint, a flexible coating (the cartilage) covers the areas of bone in contact and allows them to slide. However, the latter is significantly worn (osteoarthritis). The bone gradually becomes uncovered and deforms, which causes friction during movement. The joint becomes more and more stiff and painful. It may get so bad that you can't walk, or you have problems with other joints.
Indication: hip arthroplasty
This is why your surgeon offers you an operation (hip replacement). This involves removing part or all of the joint and replacing it with artificial material of the same shape (prosthesis). Either you are asleep completely (general anesthesia) or you only put your lower body to sleep (perimedullary anesthesia).

Progress of the operation
The surgeon cuts the head of the femur, then digs into the bone to introduce the stem of the prosthesis, which he fixes with or without cement. The operation stops there if we only replace the head of the femur (cephalic prosthesis). If it is also necessary to replace the acetabulum (total prosthesis), the surgeon removes the cartilage and prepares the bone so as to place a kind of hollow bowl (cup) in which the head of the prosthesis slides.
This usually takes one to three hours. You remain hospitalized for ten days. If the pain is severe at the very beginning, there are treatments available to relieve you. It is normal to feel pain the first few times you stand up and start walking again. But the pain associated with osteoarthritis is gone. To limit the risk of infection, we check that you have no illnesses before, during and after the operation. Treatment reduces the risk of blood plugs (clots) forming in the veins of the legs (phlebitis). Sometimes the two legs are not the same length after the operation, which causes a slight limp. Several weeks of rehabilitation are often necessary. It is best to lead a calm life for two to three months, gradually resuming your activities. The result of the operation is often spectacular. Some people forget they are wearing a prosthesis. However, avoid violent sports and heavy work.
